The library’s Second Start Program offers free tutoring, classes, and computer use to people 16 and older who read or write below the eighth-grade level. Call for information.

Hours for the Second Start Adult Literacy Program are Tuesday 10am-8pm; Wednesday 10am-5pm; Thursday 2pm-8pm; Friday 10am-5pm; and Saturday 10am-5pm.

Out of the Rubble: 20 Years After Loma Prieta
The exhibit contains photographs, ephemeral materials and publications from the collections of the Oakland History Room and is part of an on-going effort by the Oakland Public Library to expand those collections through contributions from those who experienced the historic seismic event of October 17, 1989. (Guest curators: Emily Foster and Chelsea Kirkland.)

Library Artists, Performers & Writers Go Public!

On Exhibit! See the Oakland Public Library staff in a whole new light as they share their creative work with the public in November. This will be the second annual exhibit of OAKLAND LIBRARY ARTISTS GO PUBLIC! Twenty-six visual artists will exhibit their paintings, photographs, prints, and drawings in the Rockridge Branch Gallery. To meet the artists and attend a gala showcase of performers, craftspeople and poets call 510/601-8663. The library gallery is located on the second floor and is accessible by stairs and elevator. Check the Branch's hours of operation to view the show.

Prospects of the Imagination: Nature Images by Melissa West
Melissa West's subject matter comes from nature, but she define that term broadly. She draws inspiration from both real-life and literary landscapes. This show features acrylic paintings of scenes from the Bay Area and beyond, and also linoleum block prints inspired by fairy tales and William Blake.

Challenges of Champions: Reflecting on the Effect of Oakland Homicides in Public Art
The TeenZone Art Wall presents a display of letters written by Oakland youth as well as memorial wooden sculptures created in response to violent deaths in our community. The exhibit is curated by local artist Kristi Holohan of ACE Arts. The Art Wall is on the second floor of the Main Library, just outside the TeenZone.

Memory Camp

This 12-week class meets weekly, on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, starting Sept. 15 and concluding Dec. 8, 2009.
