THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING A RACCOON RABIES VACCINATION PROGRAM TO BEGIN ON OCTOBER 14, 2014 THAT WILL CONCLUDE ON OCTOBER 24, 2014.
Brown colored fishmeal baits containing Raboral V-RG will be distributed by The United States Department of Agriculture helicopter on Tuesday, October 14th and continue by ground via Nassau County Department of Health vehicles in the southwestern portion of Nassau County which affects the Malverne area with the program ending on October 24, 2014.
We have been advised that the vaccine is not harmful to people, pets or wildlife. However, dogs that consume several baits may develop an upset stomach with no long-term health effects. It is recommended that all efforts should be made to confine dogs and cats indoors and keep pets on leashes during the bait distribution interval and for one week afterward to increase the likelihood that raccoons will find the baits.
If baits are observed in an open environment where pets or children may find them, please toss the bait under trees or bushes while wearing gloves or using a plastic bag. If contact with the bait or vaccine occurs, rinse the area with warm, soapy water, and then call Poison Control at 212-764-7667.
