OF ARMS AND ARTISTS: The American Revolution Through Painters' Eyes, by Paul Staiti

Paul Staiti brings five great American artists of the Revolutionary period—Charles Willson Peale, John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, Benjamin West, and Gilbert Stuart—to life. He shows that their lives were every bit as eventful as those of the Founders with whom they continually interacted. These men contributed mightily to America’s founding spirit and, as Staiti describes it provided a, “means of narrating the Revolution to themselves and to citizens of the new republic”  at a time of breathtaking historical change.

This event will be held at the New Britain Museum of American Art, 65 Lexington St., New Britain, CT 06052

David Herlihy, author of Bicycle: The History, and The Lost Cyclist, will give a lecture on the invention and early development of the bicycle. The invention and development of the basic bicycle in the 1860s culminated in the "safety" bicycle of the 1890s that would play such an important role in the Wright brothers' story. And there's also a timely Connecticut hook here: November 2016 will mark 150 years since the granting of the world's first bicycle patent, awarded to Pierre Lallement then living in New Haven.

LOST AMONG THE BIRDS: Accidentally Finding Myself in One Very Big Year author talk presented by Neil Hayward

Typically, when executives quit a lucrative but unfulfilling job mid-career, they open bakeries or move to Italy. But Neil Hayward took a less-expected path: he went birding. His lifelong hobby quickly evolved into a much more ambitious endeavor, as his growing list of species reluctantly catapulted him into a Big Year—a race to find the most birds in one year. Neil shocked the birding world by finding 749 species of birds and breaking the long-standing Big Year record. LOST AMONG THEBIRDS: Accidentally Finding Myself in One Very Big Year chronicles Neil’s record-breaking Big Year and how, along the way, he surprised even himself, finding a renewed sense of confidence and hope about the world and his role in it.
