America

Twin River Event Center

The year 2014 marks the 44th Anniversary of perennial classic-rock favorite, America. Founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with former band mate Dan Peek) met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song “A Horse With No Name”. America became a global household name and paved the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single.  Forty plus years later, these friends are still making music together, touring the world and thrilling audiences with their timeless sound. Their best-known tunes, which also include “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair” were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. America’s albums–six certified gold and/or platinum, with their first greatest hits collection, History, hitting four plus million in sales–displayed a fuller range of the trio’s talents than did their singles. See America live at the Twin River Event Center on November 28! Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets start at just $25 – all ages welcome

Ant’ny Claus: A Dysfunctional North Pole!

Written by Frank O’Donnell
Co-Directed by Frank O’Donnell, Kayla O’Donnell and Mark Anderson

You remember Ant’ny Claus — Santa’s not-so-little, little brother who’s on call in case Santa can’t do his job. In other words, he’s the Santa Back-Up Plan. In the latest installment of the Ant’ny Claus series, Ant’ny and the gang are called north. Way north. To the North Pole.

Santa slipped on some ice and broke his hip. While he’s whisked off for surgery, Ant’ny has to step in once again for his big brother. With just two weeks to go until Christmas, things are hectic at the North Pole, and Ant’ny is forced to deal with the issues, not the least of which is an impendingwork stoppage by the Elves Union.

The old gang — Ant’ny, Bruno Benny Blue Balls, Sonny and Holly — meet up with the new gang — including Persnickety the Elf, Elfie on a Shelfie, Notfanuttin’ The Reindeer and more — at the Pole, and there’s friction. Just when the holiday seems doomed, Carmella Senior — Ant’ny’s mother-in-law — swoops in to save the day. But is she too late?

The Blackstone Valley Historical Society is privileged to open its doors to the Cumberland-Lincoln Community Chorus on Saturday evening, December 6th, in the upstairs auditorium at North Gate, 1873 Old Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln.  As Ambassadors to Music in the Blackstone Valley Area, the Chorus has been a part of the Rhode Island music scene for over 40 years.  Their music repertoire spans from classical to contemporary, and on December 6th, it will turn to the music of the season.

The Director of the Chorus is Judith Lynn Stillman, Artist-in -Residence and Professor of Music at Rhode Island College.  With Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees from the Julliard School, Stillman is an internationally renowned soloist, chamber musician, choral conductor, composer and artist-teacher.

On December 6th, Stillman will lead the Cumberland-Lincoln Community Chorus in songs from the world of the holiday season.  This concert, for music lovers of all ages, will delight all who are there; in fact, the audience will be encouraged to “join in” when the songs are familiar.

Also, downstairs, Collector Extraordinaire Dan Bethel will have a collection of antique holiday cards on display.  Come and enjoy them with your refreshments, which will be served after the concert.

Tickets for the evening are $10.00, $5.00 for children, and those under 10 will be admitted free with an adult.  Come join us for an evening of beautiful music, food, holiday displays, and fun!

“Witty madness…dazzling and delightful!”

—The New York Times

The beloved Mummenschanz have brought myth, mystery and plenty of laughter to generations of audiences across four continents for over four decades. Since its three-year run on Broadway, this Swiss mask theatre troupe has pioneered a new form of visual performance and created a legacy. Hailed for their ability to fold, twist, arc and teeter the human body into amorphous, immensely adorable creatures, Mummenschanz promises to delight anyone from 2 to 92. Within their comic and wordless universe, everyday objects such as toilet paper, wires, tubes, and boxes spring to life to become fantastical characters. Using silence, illusion, light and shadow, these invisible masters of movement have revolutionized theatre, morphing ordinary materials into magically expressive masks and props. Their universe is filled with incredible stories that transcend the need for words, spark the imagination, and reveal timeless insight on human connections.

“To hear Philip Glass play the piano live was… like receiving a manuscript directly from the hands of Shakespeare.”

—Politikken (Denmark)

Experience an intimate evening with one of the world’s most important living composers, Philip Glass. This chamber music concert is a rare opportunity to hear Glass perform both on solo piano and alongside the exceptional violinist, Tim Fain, acclaimed for his performance in the film "Black Swan". Fain is one of the few soloists for whom Glass has composed solo material; when asked why Glass answered: "because he’s that good". Pairing two incredible artists at two very different points in their careers, this unique presentation highlights their enormous generosity of spirit and features compositions spanning Glass' career, including works created specifically for Fain. The hauntingly beautiful music of Philip Glass always transports listeners to a state of musical bliss.

"There has been no company I have been so glad to discover as Noche Flamenca and, above all, its lead dancer, Soledad Barrio. I can think of no current ballet star in the world as marvelous as she." —Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times

Sizzling flamenco electrifies the stage as this Madrid-based company of dancers, singers and musicians provides an authentic look at a fiery and expressive art form. Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca promise a passionate journey through the very heart and soul of flamenco. All aspects of flamenco – song, dance, and music – are interrelated, creating a true communal spirit among the group’s ten performers. But Barrio is the indisputable star, a great artist without pretense, who makes you aware that, above its virtuosic feet, flamenco is an art of curves, arcs and circles. Her body is her soul’s instrument, ensnared by the music, and you feel yourself fortunate to be in the same space with her.

2015 Date of Event to be announced!

The Cherry Trees of the Blackstone is a joint initiative of The Pawtucket Foundation and Blackstone Valley Tourism Council to work with the Cities of Pawtucket and Central Falls to plant cherry trees along Roosevelt Avenue in the two communities and raise money for a dedicated Landscape Improvement Fund. In the spring of 2009, 65 rancho cherry trees were purchased and planted in the project area.  The plantings have also inspired the hosting of the Annual Rhode Island Cherry Blossom Festival and an annual Earth Day clean up. In its first year the Rhode Island Cherry Blossom Festival built a strong foundation for future celebrations of the Cherry Trees planted along Roosevelt Avenue in Central Falls and Pawtucket.  More than 400 people came out to run, walk, eat and celebrate during the inaugural 2010 event and an additional 20 trees were planted on the west side of Roosevelt Avenue.  In 2011, more than 1800 runners participated in the various races held during the event.

Louis Yip and Sunny Ng, business partners and the developer of M-Residential, were prime movers behind the project offering a $30,000 investment.  Collette Vacations as well as Storage America, Anthony Gudas, and the Chinese American Church also contributed to the project.

The Cherry Trees have helped to transform this once industrial corridor into a vibrant walkable streetscape.  Organizers hope that the Annual Festival will continue to draw attention and dollars to help pay for continued maintenance and planting of future trees as the neighborhood continues to revitalize.

Avenue Q: The Musical

Music and Lyrics by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marks
Book by Jeff Whitty
Based on an Original Concept by Robert Lopez & Jess Marx

Directed by Paul Adam

Humans and puppets interact in this tale of twenty-somethings learning how to live and love in New York City. Think “Sesame Street” with adult themes, humor, and song.

Avenue Q is about real life. It’s about finding a job, losing a job, learning about racism, getting an apartment, getting kicked out of your apartment, being different, falling in love, promiscuity, avoiding commitment, hang-overs, Internet porn and discovering the world.
