~~The Pawtucket Parks & Recreation Division presents “Fright Night in the Park” at Slater Memorial Park. The Halloween festivities take place on Friday and Saturday evenings with the exception of inclement weather, starting October 3 and continue through October 25.  The Haunted Tunnel will continue through Saturday, November 1.  Event cancellations will be noted on the “City of Pawtucket’s” and the “Slater Park Haunted Tunnel” Facebook pages.

The Haunted Tunnel attraction will take place at the Daggett Farm facility in the Park.  The tunnel opens at 6:30 and must be closed by 9 p.m.  Early arrival is strongly suggested due to large attendance and line closure prior to 9 p.m.  The cost for the Tunnel is $8.00 per person.  Because of its scary content, the Tunnel is strongly recommended for ages 12 and above only.  The Haunted Tunnel can be found on Facebook under “Slater Park Haunted Tunnel” and at “Haunted Tunnel at Daggett Farm” on Youtube.

Adjacent to the Daggett Farm concession area is the “family-friendly” “Jack-o-Lantern Village” event displayed with jack-o-lanterns, a witch’s house and a variety of funny face houses.  Returning visitors should be aware that this is a new location from past years.  Admission is $4.00.  The Jack-o-Lantern Village display is tentatively scheduled to open from October 3 through October 25 on Friday and Saturday evenings, weather permitting.

The carousel will remain open throughout the month’s festivities until October 25 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  Crafts and other surprises for the children will take place on various nights during the October month.  These specific nights have not yet been determined.

Across from the carousel, the paddle boats will be extending their hours to include Friday and Saturday nights throughout the Fright Night event until 8:00 p.m.  They will also remain open on Sunday afternoons throughout the month of October, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Pawtucket Dog Park Committee will be organizing the annual free Paws & More Canine Costume Contest on Saturday, October 25 at the stage adjacent to Slater Park Pond.  Celebrity judges will be selecting finalists in various categories.  Event details and registrations are available at pawtucketdogpark.com. Further details are available by email at info@pawtucketdogpark.com or on the “Pawtucket Dog Park” Facebook page.  Entry forms may be completed and submitted to the Slater Park Office.

Volunteer group organizations are needed to assist with the carousel festivities.  For further information or to request volunteer applications for any of these events, call the Pawtucket Parks & Recreation office at 728-0500 x251, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am through 4:30 pm or contact John Blais @ jblais@pawtucketri.com.

  • 80th anniversary of 1934 Saylesville textile strike
  • Lecture at North Gate, 1873 Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln, RI

Glenn Laxton, local historian and former anchor and reporter for WPRI-TV, will be giving a presentation on  the 1934 textile workers strike in Saylesville, RI and the “Battle of the Gravestones”.  As part of the presentation, he will also be showing a piece he did for Channel 12 on the incident.

The textile workers strike of 1934 was the largest strike in the history of the U. S. at that time, involving 400,000 workers from New England, the mid-Atlantic and Southern states, and lasting twenty-two days.  At the Saylesville Bleachery, hundreds of strikers and picketers attempted to shut down the plant.  Deputy sheriffs hired by the mill tried to defend it with nightsticks and tear gas. Eventually the Governor called out the National Guard.  The battle continued through the nearby Moshassuck Cemetery, where many of the gravestones show bullet holes.

Museum of Work & Culture Invites All-Abilities Visitors to its First “Made to Order Monday”

On October 6, 2014 the Museum of Work & Culture will open its doors to visitors of all-abilities for a new program called “Made to Order Mondays.” As part of its special education initiative, the Museum has been developing programs and resources in order to better serve visitors of all cognitive and physical abilities in an open and welcoming environment. On the Museum’s new Made to Order Monday program, Director Anne Conway says, “while we are usually closed on Mondays, we wanted to offer a day when families with members with special needs could learn and enjoy what we have to offer in a judgment-free zone.”

Over the past year, the Museum has been working with organizations such as The Autism Project and Meeting Street in order to develop inclusive programs and resources. Some of the new additions to the Museum include tools that engage senses beyond vision. Scent stations throughout the exhibits evoke their environment, such as the smell of baked bread in the farmhouse or machine oil on the mill floor. Also available are “first/then” boards, which help visitors orient themselves within the exhibits—a tool very helpful to people on the Autism spectrum.

The first Monday of October marks the first time the Museum will be open to the public for its Made to Order program.

Hours: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm

Admission: $8 adult, $6 senior and students, Children under 10 are free with a paid adult.

Please contact the Museum at (401) 769-9675 for questions about the program or if you are interested in getting involved.

    Contact: Kathy Hartley   726-0597   kathy.hartley@hearthsidehouse.org

The popular Victorian epitaph, Gone But Not Forgotten, captures the theme of Hearthside House Museum's October exhibit, which opens on October 18, 2014. While many of today's funeral practices came from the Victorian era, many are not aware of the origins or some of the other practices that are no longer done.  Hearthside takes on a somber look as its occupants are in mourning, with black draped throughout the house, on windows and mirrors. But visitors tend to be anything but mournful at this popular exhibit. Instead they are fascinated to learn of the elaborate, and sometimes bizarre, mourning protocols.

The occasion is a wake for former Hearthside's owner, Simon E. Thornton, who died on May 2, 1873. His body would have been prepared at the house by the undertaker, who came with his equipment and a portable embalming table. The coffin was displayed in the Drawing Room where visitors would come and pay their respects.  The exhibit includes a period wicker coffin on display surrounded by fragrant flowers, a portrait of Thornton, mourning fashions, jewelry made from the hair of the deceased, black-bordered stationery, and post-mortem photographs in which family members pose with deceased loved ones propped up in a life-like position. Also on display are a funeral parlor journal showing the recorded death of Simon Thornton, and the antique embalming tools and portable table likely used by the undertaker to prepare Thornton's body in Hearthside's master bedroom. In the dining room, visitors are offered special Victorian "funeral cookies," as they learn about the customs that families practiced when someone passed. Traditional funeral music fills the house, and our docents who will be dressed in mourning attire provide informative tours.

Additional dates for the exhibit are:
 Sunday, Oct. 19th 1-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25th  4-7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26th 1-4 p.m.

Reservations accepted for the Saturday candlelight tours held on the hour. Admission for Candlelight Tours is $10 per person. Daytime tours are $8 for adults; $6 for seniors; $4 for ages 10-17, and under 10 free. Just in time for Halloween, join us at a Paper Cutting Crafts special event — and make your own Halloween decoration — on October 19, 2014, Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Smith-Appleby House Museum in Smithfield, RI.

Scherenschnitte (shear-n-snit-a) is the charming art of paper cutting. We’ll be hosting our own session of Scherenschnitte fun, presented as a craft in our barn, for young and old alike.

After folding and cutting your own Halloween decoration, you’ll tour the historical Smith-Appleby House to see and hear what daily life was really like in Colonial Rhode Island during the American Revolution. Tours are led by educators and history enthusiasts in Colonial dress.

The Smith-Appleby House dates to 1696 and was built by Elisha Smith, the grandson of John Smith “The Miller,” a member of Roger Williams’ original party of six men who left the Massachusetts Bay Colony to start the colony of Providence, Rhode Island, in 1636. Expanded from its original construction as a one-room stone-ender cottage, the delicately restored 12-room historic farmhouse features beautiful cabinet work, varied architectural designs, original stencils, and furnished rooms showcasing an intriguing collection of antiques.

The cost for the Paper Cutting Crafts event is free.  Museum tours are $5 per adult, and children are free.

The House is located at 220 Stillwater Rd. in Smithfield, RI, just off I-295. For more information, visit http://smithapplebyhouse.org.

The historic Smith-Appleby House is operated by the Historical Society of Smithfield, RI, as a living Museum hosting a variety of educational activities, programs, and events throughout the year. Group tours are available for schools, scouts, and other community organizations. The House and property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are also available to rent for private events.

Hearthside is located at 677 Great Road, Lincoln, RI.  For more information or to reserve, please call 401-726-0597 or email Kathy.hartley@hearthsidehouse.org

Founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with former band mate Dan Peek) met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song “A Horse With No Name”. America became a global household name and paved the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single.  Forty plus years later, these friends are still making music together, touring the world and thrilling audiences with their timeless sound. Their best-known tunes, which also include “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair” were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. America’s albums–six certified gold and/or platinum, with their first greatest hits collection, History, hitting four plus million in sales–displayed a fuller range of the trio’s talents than did their singles. See America live at the Twin River Event Center on November 28! Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets start at just $25 – all ages welcome

“Witty madness…dazzling and delightful!”

—The New York Times

The beloved Mummenschanz have brought myth, mystery and plenty of laughter to generations of audiences across four continents for over four decades. Since its three-year run on Broadway, this Swiss mask theatre troupe has pioneered a new form of visual performance and created a legacy. Hailed for their ability to fold, twist, arc and teeter the human body into amorphous, immensely adorable creatures, Mummenschanz promises to delight anyone from 2 to 92. Within their comic and wordless universe, everyday objects such as toilet paper, wires, tubes, and boxes spring to life to become fantastical characters. Using silence, illusion, light and shadow, these invisible masters of movement have revolutionized theatre, morphing ordinary materials into magically expressive masks and props. Their universe is filled with incredible stories that transcend the need for words, spark the imagination, and reveal timeless insight on human connections.

2015 Date of Event to be announced!

The Cherry Trees of the Blackstone is a joint initiative of The Pawtucket Foundation and Blackstone Valley Tourism Council to work with the Cities of Pawtucket and Central Falls to plant cherry trees along Roosevelt Avenue in the two communities and raise money for a dedicated Landscape Improvement Fund. In the spring of 2009, 65 rancho cherry trees were purchased and planted in the project area.  The plantings have also inspired the hosting of the Annual Rhode Island Cherry Blossom Festival and an annual Earth Day clean up. In its first year the Rhode Island Cherry Blossom Festival built a strong foundation for future celebrations of the Cherry Trees planted along Roosevelt Avenue in Central Falls and Pawtucket.  More than 400 people came out to run, walk, eat and celebrate during the inaugural 2010 event and an additional 20 trees were planted on the west side of Roosevelt Avenue.  In 2011, more than 1800 runners participated in the various races held during the event.

Louis Yip and Sunny Ng, business partners and the developer of M-Residential, were prime movers behind the project offering a $30,000 investment.  Collette Vacations as well as Storage America, Anthony Gudas, and the Chinese American Church also contributed to the project.

The Cherry Trees have helped to transform this once industrial corridor into a vibrant walkable streetscape.  Organizers hope that the Annual Festival will continue to draw attention and dollars to help pay for continued maintenance and planting of future trees as the neighborhood continues to revitalize.

Join us as we celebrate these beautifully blossoming trees! Please direct questions about the event to the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council 401-724-2200 or info@richerryblossomfestival.com.

REO SPEEDWAGON

TWIN RIVER EVENT CENTER

Formed in 1967, REO Speedwagon is a band where the main constant over the decades is a never-ending desire to give their all to their fans, year in and year out. It carved a path that was eventually followed by STYX, Kansas, Cheap Trick and more.  Platinum albums and freeform FM radio staples such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out” followed, setting the stage for 1980′s explosive Hi Infidelity. See them perform their massive hit singles such as “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run” live at the Twin River Event Center on April 10, 2015 at 8pm! All ages welcome. Tickets start at just $35
