Located just to the north of Providence in Lincoln, Rhode Island, Hearthside is a unique stone mansion built in 1810 on pastoral Great Road, the first road through the wilderness between Providence and Mendon, Massachusetts, and one of the oldest thoroughfares in America.

Hearthside has been noted as one of the finest examples of early 19th century federal-style houses in the state, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places. The unique 2 ½ story house is built of fieldstone,   which was rare in dwellings at that time. Its design includes a gable roof with impressive ogee curves above circular attic windows. There are 10 fireplaces in the 10-room home, hence the name " Hearthside. " Hearthside has become known as "The House That Love Built" because of the romantic history behind the building of this beautiful house by Stephen Hopkins Smith.

Avenue Q: The Musical

Music and Lyrics by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marks
Book by Jeff Whitty
Based on an Original Concept by Robert Lopez & Jess Marx

Directed by Paul Adam

Humans and puppets interact in this tale of twenty-somethings learning how to live and love in New York City. Think “Sesame Street” with adult themes, humor, and song.

Avenue Q is about real life. It’s about finding a job, losing a job, learning about racism, getting an apartment, getting kicked out of your apartment, being different, falling in love, promiscuity, avoiding commitment, hang-overs, Internet porn and discovering the world.

This year participants have three options to enjoy the day. Bicyclists can ride the entire 30-mile course as part of a Craft Brewery Tour and visit three Blackstone Valley breweries along the way: Bucket Brewery, Foolproof Brewing Company and Ravenous Brewing Company. Each brewery will be offering a tour of their facility including a sampling of their own unique brew.

If 30 miles and sampling beer is not your thing, bikers can choose to take part in a leisurely ride along the historic Blackstone Canal on the 11-mile Blackstone River Bikeway, enjoying a visit to the Kelley House Museum, viewing the spectacular engineering of the Rt. 116 Viaduct, designed in the 1930s, and also the Pratt Dam where the powerful Blackstone River forges through the “tubes.”

Either way, at the end of your ride, participants can relax with refreshments, a craft beer tasting, and live music at Blackstone River Theatre performed by blues musicians Martin Grosswendt and Bertrand Laurence and the Celtic band Pendragon. Music fans who do not ride bicycles can also reserve spots for just the concert portion of the day's activities.

Registration for cyclists is $30.00 per person; register in advance www.bikeandbluestheblackstone.org. Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m., May 2, at Lonsdale Marsh, 116 John Street, in Lincoln, RI where the course starts. Bike and Blues the Blackstone will end off at Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad Street in Cumberland, RI. Music and refreshments at the theatre will go from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Patrons who only want to enjoy the music and craft beer tasting only will pay $20.00 and can call Blackstone River Theatre at 401-725-9272 to make reservations.

    Contact: Annette Robinson   401-421-4278   info@first-works.org

The Avenue Concept engages people of all ages – not just practicing artists but students, neighbors and everyday people – in creative self-expression through public art projects and innovative programs. Working as a Creative Partner in the Providence International Arts Festival, it will bring the Washington Street Cultural Corridor to life with murals, art installations, interactive expressions of creativity, and a pop-up skate and art park. Internationally noted street artists Etam Cru and Natalia Rak will also be exhibiting their unique and flamboyant visual styles through new works here in the Creative Capital. Rak’s large-scale works depicting femininity and nature in bold, colorful juxtapositions have graced walls in Hawaii, Sweden and Italy, and she has staged “Art Battles” in New York City’s Bryant Park. Polish duo Etam Cru (street artists Sainer and Bezt) creates giant murals, often several stories tall, that are steeped in folklore and mysticism throughout eastern Europe, as well as in Portugal and the U.S. Throughout the festival, The Avenue Concept’s art work and programming will foster a conversation about the role of art in the public space, and the way creative expression is instrumental in making a city vibrant and inclusive. The Avenue Concept is part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks & the City of Providence. Exact time of this performance to be announced within the next few weeks!

“I like to tell people that if you don’t know Angélique, you haven’t lived because there’s not one person who would be in her presence and not be changed” -Alicia Keys

World-music powerhouse and the “undisputed Queen of African Music” Angélique Kidjo is not only a Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, but also an outspoken humanitarian activist. Named one of the Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World by The Guardian, Kidjo is a creative energy with 12 international albums to her name. Her latest album, “Eve”, combines both sides of her work into a 13-track set of melodically rich, rhythmically powerful expressions dedicated to the beauty and resilience of African women. This global pop star has collaborated with artists as diverse as Carlos Santana, Bono, John Legend, Josh Groban, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel, Dianne Reeves, Roy Hargrove and Alicia Keys

Kidjo’s concerts are joyous and exuberant. With a richly powerful voice, commanding stage presence and a dramatic past, Kidjo’s music grips audiences and leaves them calling for more. Her FirstWorks On the Plaza concert at PIAF is essential for anyone interested in the way music can shape and be shaped by history.

Anjelique Kidjo is part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks and the City of Providence.

Showcasing striking, unexpected, and groundbreaking sounds, Bixiga is a brassy afrobeat orchestra bringing together an array of beats from Brazil’s musical palette to create a high-voltage live show that is not to be missed.

Comprised of ten talented musicians, the band formed five years ago in São Paulo, Brazil. Bixiga is a neighborhood in São Paulo, and the number 70 in its name is the number of the Gadgety Studio building, where the band was born. The hands-down favorite at last winter’s globalFEST, Bixiga’s mind-blowing stew of sounds gets the crowd dancing to an eclectic music performance incorporating trumpets, saxophones, trombones, percussion, and strings. Visit a totally different continent with the band’s fusion of Latin dance, psychedelia, jazz, and African instrumental music.

Brazil’s BIXIGA 70 is part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks and the City of Providence.

Performance is FREE! Located at Alex & Ani City Center Stage at 2 Kennedy Plaza, Burnside Park, Providence, Rhode Island.

    Contact: Annette Robinson   401-421-4278   info@first-works.org

Oumou Sangaré, or “Sangaré the Songbird,” is Mali’s great diva and a Grammy Award-winning international star. Sangaré the Songbird carries on that tradition with her spellbinding vocals and powerful songs that strike deep in the heart, using music to comment on life as it really is. Oumou Sangaré’s huge natural range and sense of rhythm is both remarkable and effortless; by turn deep and powerful, soaring and sensuous. At the Festival on the Niger, “The voice of Oumou Sangaré is like a burning fire over the staccato punch of electric bass, the rattle of djembe drum, and the crack of cowrie on calabash.” In keeping with PIAF’s focus on the world-class in the Creative Capital and abroad, she teams up with her Malian countryman Sidy Maiga, winner of the 2011 RI State Council on the Arts Folk Arts Fellowship and a Rhode Island-based master drummer in whose hands the djembe sings, laughs, whispers and electrifies.

    Contact: Annette Robinson   401-421-4278   info@first-works.org

The Squonkers roll into Kennedy Plaza with their latest road show– an outdoor musical spectacle about air, made of air, and powered by air– from a group hailed as “a multimedia troupe of infinite jest.” Figures and tentacles grow, powered by blowers and vortex fans, and culminate in the 40-foot high Lady Pneumatica raising her inflated arms to the air with a wind turbine on her head. Squonk Opera has played on three continents and in more than 25 states, using blowers, pneumatic controls, inflatables and live music to immerse their audiences in interactive, site-specific public events that attack and celebrate the idiosyncrasies of our world. With the creation of “Pneumatica”, the Squonkers pursue the most American and democratic of art forms: the public celebration, with boisterous music and surreal image—pumping up the energy to engage children and adults alike in the stuff of life: air. Squonk Opera are part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks & the City of Providence.
