Rhode Island by Design 2015 Ranger Talks at the Museum of Work and Culture

Beginning this  January 2015, the Museum of Work & Culture will be hosting a series of biweekly Ranger Talks covering a variety of historical topics relating to the year’s theme, “Rhode Island by Design.”  All talks take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Museum of Work & Culture.

Kicking off the series on Sunday, January 4th at 1:30 p.m., will be a talk by Paul Bourget entitled “Sherman’s Design of War: Marching Through Georgia in 1864.”

This ranger talk will discuss the major strategies, battle tactics, and events of General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign and his March to the Sea. Did Sherman burn Atlanta? Was Sherman’s Army the cause for total destruction of the South? This presentation will attempt to dispel modern myth that Sherman was the demon of the South’s lost cause.

The other talks will be:

January 18- A Love Designed in Newport: A Book Signing and Talk by Chip Bishop on his recent release, Quentin & Flora: A Roosevelt and a Vanderbilt in Love during the Great War

February 1- Last Shift, a film screening examining the paper mills of New Brunswick by Tony Tremblay

February 15- “What Old Maps Tell Us: A History of Woonsocket from 1820 to 1920,” a talk by Erik Eckilson

March 1- “Rhode Island Disasters,” a talk by Jim Ignasher

March 15- Francophonie in Rhode Island: Ciné-Québec Film Festival

For more information on the Ranger Talks or the Museum, please contact director Anne Conway at aconway@rihs.org or (401) 769-9675.

Located just to the north of Providence in Lincoln, Rhode Island, Hearthside is a unique stone mansion built in 1810 on pastoral Great Road, the first road through the wilderness between Providence and Mendon, Massachusetts, and one of the oldest thoroughfares in America.

Hearthside has been noted as one of the finest examples of early 19th century federal-style houses in the state, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places. The unique 2 ½ story house is built of fieldstone,   which was rare in dwellings at that time. Its design includes a gable roof with impressive ogee curves above circular attic windows. There are 10 fireplaces in the 10-room home, hence the name " Hearthside. " Hearthside has become known as "The House That Love Built" because of the romantic history behind the building of this beautiful house by Stephen Hopkins Smith.

"There has been no company I have been so glad to discover as Noche Flamenca and, above all, its lead dancer, Soledad Barrio. I can think of no current ballet star in the world as marvelous as she." —Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times

Sizzling flamenco electrifies the stage as this Madrid-based company of dancers, singers and musicians provides an authentic look at a fiery and expressive art form. Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca promise a passionate journey through the very heart and soul of flamenco. All aspects of flamenco – song, dance, and music – are interrelated, creating a true communal spirit among the group’s ten performers. But Barrio is the indisputable star, a great artist without pretense, who makes you aware that, above its virtuosic feet, flamenco is an art of curves, arcs and circles. Her body is her soul’s instrument, ensnared by the music, and you feel yourself fortunate to be in the same space with her.

HEAVENLY GINGERS 5 – a celebration of the lives and passions of Jessica Morris and Keri Anne O’Donnell, in the Twin River Event Center. Both young performers were taken from us far too early – Jessica, at the age of 20, lost her battle with ovarian cancer and Keri, at the age of 15, was killed in a tragic car accident. Memorial funds have been established in both their honors and are being used to help fuel the passion for performance in our youth within the local area.

This workshop will focus on the songs of the Rumeli (Balkan) region. Each song we learn will include a short makam theory lesson to help in the understanding of the tonalities used. Sheet music will be provided for each song. Musicians of all levels welcome! Singers welcome! All instruments welcome! No experience necessary.

The Brooklyn, NY based trio Dolunay (Turkish for “full moon”) draws upon the songs from the Turkish people living across Rumeli, the former region of the Ottoman Balkans. Dolunay’s intimate sound, sparse in loudness and textured with the dissonance of eastern blues, gives way to a sound at once earthy and celestial, the size of which defies that of the small makeup of the band. Inspired to engage with the unique repertoire of lesser-known songs and empowered with a knack to enrich the uncovered sounds with a personal note, Dolunay creates the opportunity to breathe new life into melodies of a region culturally diverse and historically rich. www.facebook.com/DolunayNYC

Formed in 1967, REO Speedwagon is a band where the main constant over the decades is a never-ending desire to give their all to their fans, year in and year out. It carved a path that was eventually followed by STYX, Kansas, Cheap Trick and more.  Platinum albums and freeform FM radio staples such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out” followed, setting the stage for 1980′s explosive Hi Infidelity. See them perform their massive hit singles such as “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run” live at the Twin River Event Center on April 10, 2015 at 8pm! All ages welcome. Gordon Bok's songwriting draws on his experience in and around the working boat culture of the Gulf of Maine. He spins into song the diverse voices of fishermen and other sea-folk, crafting a penetrating vignette or a full-fledged ballad-song as the material demands. At times he reaches deep into the wealth of sea myth that haunts the North Atlantic.

Avenue Q: The Musical

Music and Lyrics by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marks
Book by Jeff Whitty
Based on an Original Concept by Robert Lopez & Jess Marx

Directed by Paul Adam

Humans and puppets interact in this tale of twenty-somethings learning how to live and love in New York City. Think “Sesame Street” with adult themes, humor, and song.

Avenue Q is about real life. It’s about finding a job, losing a job, learning about racism, getting an apartment, getting kicked out of your apartment, being different, falling in love, promiscuity, avoiding commitment, hang-overs, Internet porn and discovering the world.

Tentative Date only, see website for updates!

The Cherry Trees of the Blackstone is a joint initiative of The Pawtucket Foundation and Blackstone Valley Tourism Council to work with the Cities of Pawtucket and Central Falls to plant cherry trees along Roosevelt Avenue in the two communities and raise money for a dedicated Landscape Improvement Fund. In the spring of 2009, 65 rancho cherry trees were purchased and planted in the project area.  The plantings have also inspired the hosting of the Annual Rhode Island Cherry Blossom Festival and an annual Earth Day clean up. In its first year the Rhode Island Cherry Blossom Festival built a strong foundation for future celebrations of the Cherry Trees planted along Roosevelt Avenue in Central Falls and Pawtucket.  More than 400 people came out to run, walk, eat and celebrate during the inaugural 2010 event and an additional 20 trees were planted on the west side of Roosevelt Avenue.  In 2011, more than 1800 runners participated in the various races held during the event.

Louis Yip and Sunny Ng, business partners and the developer of M-Residential, were prime movers behind the project offering a $30,000 investment.  Collette Vacations as well as Storage America, Anthony Gudas, and the Chinese American Church also contributed to the project.

The Cherry Trees have helped to transform this once industrial corridor into a vibrant walkable streetscape.  Organizers hope that the Annual Festival will continue to draw attention and dollars to help pay for continued maintenance and planting of future trees as the neighborhood continues to revitalize.

Join us as we celebrate these beautifully blossoming trees! Please direct questions about the event to the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council 401-724-2200 or info@richerryblossomfestival.com.
