Lincoln’s Hearthside House announces the availability of tickets for it's annual  American Girl Doll Tea weekend scheduled for May 30 & 31.  Now in its 8th year, the American Girl Doll Tea is a memorable time that has become a tradition for many families and a new experience for many moms, grandmothers, girls and their dolls.  The event is for young girls ages 5-10 and offers an opportunity to dress up and attend an elegant afternoon tea with their moms.  The girls learn a valuable history lesson of proper manners while sipping tea from elegant china and enjoying miniature tea sandwiches and sweets, just as Samantha, the 1904 American Girl Doll character, would have done during that time at her grandmother's mansion. Prizes, raffles, a favor for each girl, tours of the house and shopping for a special treat in Hearthside's Gift Shop, which will include a wonderful collection of handmade outfits and accessories for the dolls, all  make for a fun and memorable afternoon.

Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling Hearthside.  Because of the popularity of the event, the event has grown to being held over a two day period, and there are two seatings offered each day at 12:30 p.m. -2:00 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Cost is $20 per person.  Seating is limited and is always a sell-out.

Built in 1810 and a private residence until 1997, Hearthside is currently owned by the Town of Lincoln.  The event is sponsored by the Friends of Hearthside, an all-volunteer organization that serves as stewards of the town-owned Hearthside House, which is an award-winning historic house museum.  All event proceeds go towards the continued restoration of the house.  Hearthside is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

To purchase tickets, call 401-726-0597 or for more information kathy.hartley@hearthsidehouse.org.

The Earth Harp is the largest stringed instrument on the planet. Part sculpture, part instrument, and part architecture, the sound it creates is nothing short of remarkable. Together with one of the most unique and breathtaking ensembles in the world, the Earth Harp Collective, inventor William Close pushes the envelope of the musical experience – making beautiful music with a massive physics machine. The long golden strings will be played by Close running rosin-covered gloves along the instrument, creating beautiful, cello like tones. Turning the Earth/landscape into a giant harp, her strings have stretched 1,000 feet to the top of the Seattle Space Needle, temples in Vietnam and the Colosseum in Rome. In another “first work” for the Festival, the iconic Superman Building becomes part of the instrument for an extraordinary musical performance. Three-days of celebration, including community “plays” with local students from FirstWorks Arts Learning, culminate in Festival concerts on Saturday, June 13. The Earth Harp is part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks & the City of Providence.

“The effect is direct and unmediated. The people shown… are as varied and vivid as their city.”

–The Boston Globe

Have you ever really looked at the people around you – your neighbors, the people walking past you on the street, the folks living and working all around you? “Seen/Unseen: Providence” is a project that has crisscrossed our city’s neighborhoods, documenting the images and lives of those people in a way that forces us to stop and take notice. Photographer Mary Beth Meehan shows us Providence as it lives and breathes, and now her images will stand writ large with 10 large-scale prints adorning buildings along the Washington Street Cultural Corridor. The installation begins facing Empire Street at Trinity Rep, and continues down Washington Street. City Hall will also feature a larger exhibition of portraits, along with text from Meehan’s “Seen/Unseen” blog (marybethmeehan.tumblr.com), on which she documents the creation of the project. These are striking depictions of the people we live amongst every day, but don’t often truly see. Seen/Unseen is part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks & the City of Providence. Exact time to be announced within the next few weeks!

Have you seen a CatFish swimming around town lately? Now follow the colorful fish as they converge Downtown in their nesting ground to celebrate the Providence International Arts Festival. These large-scale public creations are the work of Tape Art – which is both a group of artists and the medium in which they work. Their imaginative, engaging works have graced the walls of Providence, Buffalo, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Athens, drawing artists and viewers alike into a public conversation through collaborative drawing. The art form is immediate, accessible and, by nature, temporary, making a powerful statement about the role of creative expression in our daily lives. The CatFish project will begin over the next several weeks with large fish popping up in neighborhoods around the city. During the festival, they will converge into the largest school of fish you’re ever likely to see swimming around Downtown! Tape Art is part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks & the City of Providence. Exact times will be posted within the next few weeks!

“Sarah Ruhl’s distinctive tone and technique have quickly made her one of the most produced and most admired of young playwrights… Often in the same instant, she makes us laugh and gasp at the hideous, hilarious absurdity of life.” –The Boston Globe

Trinity Rep celebrates the Providence International Arts Festival with the world premiere of “Melancholy Play: A Chamber Musical”, written by Tony Award nominee and Brown alum Sarah Ruhl, along with prolific Public Theater (NY) composer Todd Almond. It’s the enchanting story of Tilly, a bank teller whose depression has the odd effect of making her irresistible and alluring. Everyone who meets her falls head over heels, including her tailor and even her own therapist. But what becomes of her when she stops being so sad? Trinity Rep stages this captivating new work under the direction of Obie Award winner Liesl Tommy. They will also provide a peak behind the curtain of the production during a “Lunch and Learn” on Friday, June 12. Bring your lunch and join in the conversation about the making of theatrical magic. The Avenue Concept engages people of all ages – not just practicing artists but students, neighbors and everyday people – in creative self-expression through public art projects and innovative programs. Working as a Creative Partner in the Providence International Arts Festival, it will bring the Washington Street Cultural Corridor to life with murals, art installations, interactive expressions of creativity, and a pop-up skate and art park. Internationally noted street artists Etam Cru and Natalia Rak will also be exhibiting their unique and flamboyant visual styles through new works here in the Creative Capital. Rak’s large-scale works depicting femininity and nature in bold, colorful juxtapositions have graced walls in Hawaii, Sweden and Italy, and she has staged “Art Battles” in New York City’s Bryant Park. Polish duo Etam Cru (street artists Sainer and Bezt) creates giant murals, often several stories tall, that are steeped in folklore and mysticism throughout eastern Europe, as well as in Portugal and the U.S. Throughout the festival, The Avenue Concept’s art work and programming will foster a conversation about the role of art in the public space, and the way creative expression is instrumental in making a city vibrant and inclusive. “I like to tell people that if you don’t know Angélique, you haven’t lived because there’s not one person who would be in her presence and not be changed” -Alicia Keys

World-music powerhouse and the “undisputed Queen of African Music” Angélique Kidjo is not only a Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, but also an outspoken humanitarian activist. Named one of the Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World by The Guardian, Kidjo is a creative energy with 12 international albums to her name. Her latest album, “Eve”, combines both sides of her work into a 13-track set of melodically rich, rhythmically powerful expressions dedicated to the beauty and resilience of African women. This global pop star has collaborated with artists as diverse as Carlos Santana, Bono, John Legend, Josh Groban, Philip Glass, Peter Gabriel, Dianne Reeves, Roy Hargrove and Alicia Keys

Kidjo’s concerts are joyous and exuberant. With a richly powerful voice, commanding stage presence and a dramatic past, Kidjo’s music grips audiences and leaves them calling for more. Her FirstWorks On the Plaza concert at PIAF is essential for anyone interested in the way music can shape and be shaped by history.

Anjelique Kidjo is part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks and the City of Providence.

Showcasing striking, unexpected, and groundbreaking sounds, Bixiga is a brassy afrobeat orchestra bringing together an array of beats from Brazil’s musical palette to create a high-voltage live show that is not to be missed.

Comprised of ten talented musicians, the band formed five years ago in São Paulo, Brazil. Bixiga is a neighborhood in São Paulo, and the number 70 in its name is the number of the Gadgety Studio building, where the band was born. The hands-down favorite at last winter’s globalFEST, Bixiga’s mind-blowing stew of sounds gets the crowd dancing to an eclectic music performance incorporating trumpets, saxophones, trombones, percussion, and strings. Visit a totally different continent with the band’s fusion of Latin dance, psychedelia, jazz, and African instrumental music.

Brazil’s BIXIGA 70 is part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks and the City of Providence.

Performance is FREE! Located at Alex & Ani City Center Stage at 2 Kennedy Plaza, Burnside Park, Providence, Rhode Island.

Oumou Sangaré, or “Sangaré the Songbird,” is Mali’s great diva and a Grammy Award-winning international star. Sangaré the Songbird carries on that tradition with her spellbinding vocals and powerful songs that strike deep in the heart, using music to comment on life as it really is. Oumou Sangaré’s huge natural range and sense of rhythm is both remarkable and effortless; by turn deep and powerful, soaring and sensuous. At the Festival on the Niger, “The voice of Oumou Sangaré is like a burning fire over the staccato punch of electric bass, the rattle of djembe drum, and the crack of cowrie on calabash.” In keeping with PIAF’s focus on the world-class in the Creative Capital and abroad, she teams up with her Malian countryman Sidy Maiga, winner of the 2011 RI State Council on the Arts Folk Arts Fellowship and a Rhode Island-based master drummer in whose hands the djembe sings, laughs, whispers and electrifies.

The Squonkers roll into Kennedy Plaza with their latest road show– an outdoor musical spectacle about air, made of air, and powered by air– from a group hailed as “a multimedia troupe of infinite jest.” Figures and tentacles grow, powered by blowers and vortex fans, and culminate in the 40-foot high Lady Pneumatica raising her inflated arms to the air with a wind turbine on her head. Squonk Opera has played on three continents and in more than 25 states, using blowers, pneumatic controls, inflatables and live music to immerse their audiences in interactive, site-specific public events that attack and celebrate the idiosyncrasies of our world. With the creation of “Pneumatica”, the Squonkers pursue the most American and democratic of art forms: the public celebration, with boisterous music and surreal image—pumping up the energy to engage children and adults alike in the stuff of life: air. Squonk Opera are part of the Providence International Arts Festival June 11-14 put on by FirstWorks & the City of Providence. End of the Row is a thrilling and unique piece of work taking place in both modern and historical time periods. It revolves around the Women’s Suffrage movement in the early 1900s during which time Alice Paul had strongly impacted the fight for women’s right to vote, issues in today’s young female culture, and the connection between the two as it relates to today’s youth. Daring and brave in its execution, End of the Row will be sure to enlighten and educate, by creatively bringing historical figures, beloved icons, and relatable characters to life together onstage!

Experience the Blackstone River Aboard the
Blackstone Valley Explorer

Once polluted, the Blackstone River has recovered beautifully! On our cruises you may see swan, herons, geese, ducks, turtles, hawks and beautiful plants and trees! The tour guide explains the ecology of the river and surrounding wetlands interspersed with stories about the people and history of the region. If you have never cruised on the Riverboat “Explorer” it is something you must do; and if you have, you can join with us again and again because every time you go on the river, you see something new!
