The gardening season is about to begin.  It’s time to think about what to grow, whether to start with seeds or plants, and to work out what vegetables will go where.  In this session we will talk about planning the vegetable garden, finding seeds and plants, starting seeds indoors, preparing beds for planting, and planting seeds or plants in the garden at the time and under the conditions that will give each plant the best chance to thrive.  We’ll talk about the seed library as a source for seeds, and a place to donate seeds at the end of the season.  We'll have some seeds available for you to plant in your garden. (This is the second of four quarterly sessions on gardening, each one covering the months ahead.  Upcoming sessions will be on May 7th and August 6th.) This program is free and open to the public. William Hall Library is handicapped accessible.

What’s a Minecraft Workshop?  A Minecraft Workshop is a  drop-in program where teens can get together using laptops to work on different ingame-related activities.  Not sure how to craft an item that requires redstone?  Or maybe you feel you know a lot about it and you want to share your secrets with others?  This might be the workshop for you!

In this Minecraft Workshop, participants will work with Redstone.  Using a combination of working in pairs or groups, teens will work together to make a TNT cannon, hidden temple doors, and other cool contraptions.

This is a drop-in program, so no registration is required.  But laptops are limited, so please be aware of that you may have to share a computer with someone.  And that could be a great thing!

This month, the group discusses The Underground Girls of Kabul: In Search of a Hidden Resistance in Afghanistan by Jenny Norberg. In Afghanistan, a culture ruled almost entirely by men, the birth of a son is cause for celebration and the arrival of a daughter is often mourned as misfortune. A bacha posh (literally translated from Dari as “dressed up like a boy”) is a third kind of child – a girl temporarily raised as a boy and presented as such to the outside world. Jenny Nordberg, the reporter who broke the story of this phenomenon for the New York Times, constructs a powerful and moving account of those secretly living on the other side of a deeply segregated society where women have almost no rights and little freedom.   This program is free and open to the public.  William Hall Library is handicapped accessible.
