    Contact: Reference Department   401-333-2552 x 2   reference@cumberlandlibrary.org

The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

    Contact: Aaron Coutu   333-2552 x128   acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org

Buried AliveWhat would it be like to be buried alive?  It was a common fear among people who lived during the Victorian Era … so much so that they made arrangements to help rescue people that might find themselves in that situation.  If you want to know more about this scary situation and other strange tales of being buried alive, the Cumberland Public Library will be hosting local author and historian Jim Ignasher on Wednesday, October 12, at 6:30 pm for a presentation on this topic..

Come hear tales you’ve probably never heard before such as how there was a man who was legally declared a corpse while still alive.  Learn about the man who made a living at playing dead.  These are just some of the interesting and spooky stories you will hear at this fun and scary presentation.

Jim Ignasher has been interested in history since his youth, and in recent years began writing about it. He searches for long forgotten stories that other writers may have overlooked, thus hoping to give his readers a new perspective.  He has written three books on Rhode Island history and co-authored a fourth, and has written numerous local history articles for Your Smithfield Magazine, and currently writes for the newly established Smithfield Times.  Jim is active with the Historical Society of Smithfield, which operates and maintains the historic Smith-Appleby House Museum, and enjoys giving talks and presentations to various groups and organizations as a way of sharing history’s “forgotten tales.”

Those interested in registering for the presentation or to ask questions about the series can call the library at 333-2552 x2 or can email Aaron Coutu at acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org.
