SEPTEMBER CONTEST FOR GRADES 2-5.   We'd like to make some bookmarks for kids.  Here is your chance to design one.  What is your favorite book ever?  How would you turn this book into a bookmark to get other kids to read that book?  Blank bookmarks are available in the Children's Room starting September 1.  Design the front to promote your book.  Don't forget to turn the bookmark over and fill out the back so we'll know who to give credit for the design.  Several designs may be printed.  The grand prize winner will get a gift card to Dollar Tree.  Return entries to the brown wooden box on the Self Checkout Table in the Children's Room by Wednesday, September 28th.  The winner will be announced Sept. 30th.

Something new!  We're starting a book club for just first graders.  There will be three meetings, one in September, one in October and one in November.  Books will be available at the front desk.  You will be notified when they arrive.  Everyone will read the same book at home.  All first graders will not be expected to read the book independently.  We encourage families to enjoy the book together and start a conversation about it at home.  Then we'll meet to talk about the book in a fun way while having a small snack and doing a craft related to the book. This program aims to let children ENJOY books.  It is not about teaching them to read.  It's for kids who love to read and kids who are reluctant readers.  When you register, you are signing up for three months - September, October, and November.

Danielle has traveled extensively through Asia, learning first-hand about the growth and production of all types of tea.  Her personal relationships with individual growers insure the supply of a high quality brew in your cup.

This program will supply you with all the information you need to know about the fastest growing beverage in the world – TEA!

Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music (University of Oklahoma Press, May 2016) celebrates in depth the vibrant soundscape of Native North America from the “heartbeat” of intertribal drums and “warble” of Native flutes to contemporary rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews with musicians, producers, ethnographers, and record-label owners, author, photographer, and musician Craig Harris conjures an aural tapestry in which powwow drums and end-blown woodwinds resound alongside operatic and symphonic strains and Native infused rock, jazz, reggae, country music, blues, hip-hip, and electronic dance music.

Passion for music provides fuel for percussionist, educator, author, and photographer, Craig Harris. The author of The New Folk Music, The Band: Pioneers of Americana Music, and Heartbeat, Warble and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music, Harris has written music-oriented articles, reviews, and photographs for newspapers, magazines, and websites for more than four decades. A skilled percussionist, Harris has appeared in concert and/or on recordings with Rod MacDonald, C.J. Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Zydeco Band, Jonathan Edwards, Greg Brown, Don White, Melanie, Rick Danko (The Band), and Merl Saunders. He currently plays with the Gaea Star Band, with whom he cohosts the weekly Gaea Crystal Radio Hour for the Dream Vision 7 Radio Network. Applehead/SONY released their CD, Who We Are in November 2015. Possessing a Master’s in education, Harris taught music in public and charter schools for a quarter of a century before launching his multicultural, participatory, and fun-for-all-ages Drum Away the Blues program in 2009.

New Hampshire Blues Challenge winner "Poor Howard" Stith has been performing 12-string barrel house blues for over forty years. He has performed across the U.S., Europe, and Japan. His expertise on the 12-string guitar, his knowledge of early blues, and his warm sense of humor, have won him fans wherever he travels. "A Walk Through the Delta" is both educational and entertaining, mixing music and folk humor, and showing how this distinctly American music has gained international popularity.
