In this John C. Wright’s debut novel, humans have become as gods: immortal, almost omnipotent, able to create new suns and resculpt body and mind. A trusting son of this future, Phaethon of Radamanthus House, discovers the rulers of the solar system have erased entire centuries from his mind. When he attempts to regain his lost memories, the whole society of the Golden Oecumene opposes him. Like his mythical namesake, Phaethon has flown too high and been cast down. He has committed the one act forbidden in his utopian universe. Now he must find out what it is--and who he is. Next month’s SciFi Book Club title: "Flashforward" by Robert J. Sawyer. Refreshments served. Registration suggested.

The story follows Hetty "Handful" Grimke, a Charleston slave, and Sarah, the daughter of the wealthy Grimke family. The novel begins on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership over Handful, who is to be her handmaid. The Invention of Wings follows the next thirty-five years of their lives. Inspired in part by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke (a feminist, suffragist, and, importantly, an abolitionist), Kidd allows herself to go beyond the record to flesh out the inner lives of all the characters, both real and imagined.

This lecture comprises video clips and slide shows to focus on traditional Chinese culture, classical dance, and music, all of which were nearly lost during the 20th century. A Q&A session follows the presentation. Based in New York, Shen Yun is the first company to present classical Chinese dance to the world on a large scale. And it has taken the globe by storm, performing in over 100 cities, including New York, London, Paris, Berlin, and Tokyo. In the United States, Shen Yun has been well received in top-notch venues, such as New York's Lincoln Center, and Washington DC's John F. Kennedy Center.
