Benjamin Britten’s tragic opera, Peter Grimes, in which the “individual is pitted against the masses, is a hallmark of 20th century English opera. Set in the mid-19th century, Britten combines elements of traditional 19th century musical form and aesthetics with the new musical language of the mid-20th century in a score of dramatic intensity and compelling realism. Professor Timothy Urban will reveal what makes this work a masterpiece of contemporary opera. Sponsored by the Friends of the West Windsor Library.

For teens ages 10+ and their parents.

Do you enjoy YA science fiction and fantasy? Do you like talking about what you read? Join us each month as we discuss a different great YA sci-fi/fantasy book!

This month’s award-winning book is Etiquette & Espionage (Book 1) by Gail Carriger (2013). Set in an alternative Victorian England, this paranormal steampunk story follows Sophronia on her finishing school adventures - the school being on a floating airship and her classes including "the fine arts of death, diversion, and the modern weaponries!" While all ages are welcome to attend, Kirkus Reviews suggests that Carriger’s novel is most appropriate for readers 11 years and older.

The book club will be held in the Children’s Activity Room. It is open to teens and their parents, though teens may also come on their own.

Online registration is required.

Presenters are Jessi Cole Jackson, Jean Graham, and Karen LeMorvan. Jessi Cole Jackson is currently studying for an MFA in children's literature at Hollins University. She has published short stories in Crossed Genres Magazine, InterGalactic Medicine Show, and in the MG/YA anthology 2016 Young Explorer's Adventure Guide, among others. In addition to her work at Hollins University, she has taken workshops with Orson Scott Card and Mary Robinette Kowal.

Jean Graham is Professor of English at TCNJ and one of the teachers of TCNJ's young adult literature course. She is currently interim coordinator of English Secondary Education, and sometime supervisor of student teachers.

Rated R; Bosnian; 97 minutes

Set during the height of the Bosnian War in 1993, a group of Bosnian soldiers are advancing on Serb territory under the cover of a foggy night. At daybreak, the fog lifts, and the Serbs open fire. Soon there is only one Bosnian survivor because he was able to dive into a trench in no man's land. He then watches as two Serbian soldiers use the body of a fallen Bosnian to bait a land mine. He fires on them, killing one, and taking the second hostage. Now both are alone and equally armed, so they are forced to share a wary trust as they try to attract help from either side. Sponsored by the Friends of the West Windsor Library.

Besides improving physical function and slowing the physical aging process, exercise is also an excellent way to manage stress and feel better throughout each day. This session consists of methods that improve joint mobility, strength, and flexibility, and will incorporate therapeutic strategies to correct muscular imbalances. The combination of isometric and dynamic movements are designed to condition the muscles and tendons, in addition to building a foundation of strength and endurance required for more demanding physical exercise.

Using no weights or equipment, the principles and progressions instructed in this class can be incorporated into an existing exercise routine or stand alone as a workout that can be performed anywhere. Please bring a yoga mat, towel and water bottle.

Why be rejected when you can become one of the select few? Whether you’re interested in a selective, a highly selective, an ivy or a public ivy, a state, or a local college, you must distinguish yourself from other applicants. Mark Walters, director of IvySmartAmerica (http://www.ivysmartamerica.com/), will share with parents and students his 30+ years of experience. From transcript to profile to essay, he will show students how to stand out from the crowd, and have control and power over the process. He will make clear what he sees as the five most frequent causes for rejection—and will empower his audience with the tools and pathways needed to turn rejection into selection!
