Born in Prague when it belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Rilke is considered one of the German language's greatest 20th century poets. His haunting images tend to focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety - themes that tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist poets. His writings include one novel, several collections of poetry, and several volumes of correspondence. Registration suggested.

In our daily lives we pay very little attention to the water flowing all around us. Every day we cross bridges in our cars, occasionally our basements get wet, and sometimes we witness destructive flooding, but for the most part our local waterways are out of sight and out of mind. For earlier generations, however, streams were necessary both to sustain life and to power industry. Township Historian Dennis Waters will tell the story of our local streams, how they helped to shape the Lawrence of today, and how they in turn were shaped by forces that began well before the first colonists arrived in Maidenhead.
