Consider gaining some skills in ethical hacking, the branch of “hacking” concerned with finding holes in programs and websites before the bad guys do. Join this program to get off the ground with your hacking career! We’re not going to be hacking into Google or anything, but we’re certain you’ll have fun getting yourself ankle-deep into this exciting realm of computer science.

Tuesday, July 28, 7:00 - 8:30 pm The mind is an extraordinarily powerful tool that plays an important role in helping us achieve success, yet most people do not tap into that readily available power. Did you know that 75–90% of what you do today, you did yesterday, and you will do again tomorrow? Why is our behavior so mechanical and mindless? Doing the same thing over and over again is not challenging our thought process. This workshop will teach you not only how and why your mind is holding you back, but also what you can do to immediately take control and harness the power of your mind.

    Program Description:

Are you an avid programmer ready to boast your skills to the world? Consider gaining some skills in ethical hacking, the branch of “hacking” concerned with finding holes in programs and websites before the bad guys do. Join this program to get off the ground with your hacking career! We’re not going to be hacking into Google or anything, but we’re certain you’ll have fun getting yourself ankle-deep into this exciting realm of computer science.

NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS NOT FOR PROGRAMMING BEGINNERS. We strongly recommend that if you wish to join this program, you have had significant experience in at least one object-oriented or procedural programming language (Python, Java, C, etc.) and have a solid overall understanding of the basics of how computers function (e.g. the function of RAM, what a CPU does, etc.). If all these terms sound like Greek to you, it would not be advisable to join this program.

The program will run every Friday for 6 weeks, starting July 17th, for two hours from 1 - 3 PM. Below is a schedule of the program.

Schedule:

Week 1: Introduction to the program--what is ethical hacking? Recommendations for getting good at hacking. Cryptography -- Alphabetical and Binary Ciphers, Hashes, RSA, ECC. Some fun with (virtual) Enigma machines.

Week 2: The Internals of a Computer: How x86 Assembly Makes the Modern Computer Work. Linux tutorial and an introduction to reverse engineering.

Week 3: An intro to C and the stack and heap; basic binary exploitation techniques (buffer overflows, ROP, format string attacks)

Week 4: An introduction to the structure of network communications and how the Internet works. Web hacking: SQL injection techniques, cookie stealing, PHP vulnerabilities

Week 5: Explorations in Cyber Forensics: using hex editors, analyzing packet captures and memory dumps, steganography

Week 6: Mock Capture the Flag (CTF) Competition! (No, this isn’t the game involving running played in gym class.) Program members will group in pairs and compete in a small competition designed to test the limits of their hacking skills. May the best hackers win!

Be sure to bring a laptop! We’d also recommend installing the software from the following URL (all of it is free and mostly open-source):

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ySjP7xuoGr_xVCVK6NCIuIfg3bzFkqDjWIboPilW9Nw/edit?usp=sharing

We recommend that you install the following software on your computer:

We recommend attending every class, though the classes aren’t exactly sequential so its okay to miss one or two. Please contact us if you know in advance that you might miss a session, and only register if you think you’ll be available for most of the sessions. Open to ages 12 - 20!

We recommend that you install the following software on your computer:

-Wireshark

Mac users may have trouble installing this due to compatibility issues, we will help you out in the first session

-A Hex Editor (we recommend HxD for Windows or iHex for Mac)

-A Disassembler of your Choice

Hopper works well for Mac, IDA Disassembler is the industry standard (if you have a Mac, we recommend both)

-Advanced REST client (available from Chrome App Store). This isn’t strictly necessary, we can also use online REST services.

-Code Editor (I recommend Sublime Text)

-Python 2.7 or 3.3 (or preferably both)

pip package manager or easy_install package manager

-C Compiler, e.g. gcc (preinstalled on Mac and Linux, available through Visual Studio or Cygwin on Windows)

Licensed New York City tour guide Marty Schneit details the history of fourteen women who made significant contributions to New York. Alva Smith Vanderbilt propelled the Vanderbilts into New York society while promoting women’s suffrage and women’s rights. Abby Aldrich Rockefeller established MOMA and held the Rockefeller family together. Elizabeth Ann Seton became the first native-born American—and New Yorker—to be named a saint by the Catholic Church. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, daughter of the richest man in the world, gave up the family riches to become a sculptor with a studio in Greenwich Village, later establishing the Whitney Museum of American Art. Rose Schneiderman did more to upgrade the dignity and living standards of working women than any other American. Marty will talk about the women’s talent and determination, and how their victories have left a lasting imprint on the modern era. Marty typifies pride and passion for the City of New York.
