The later part of the eighteenth century was a period of great change. Politics, social order, and customs were all turned upside down. Old notions about marriage for profit and prestige were replaced by the idea of romantic love. This is reflected in the world of opera where the stories concerned real people and real situations. Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” offers a close look at this interesting period. Princeton University Art Museum docent Marianne Grey will illustrate these changes and new ideas with portraits, cartoons, genre paintings and architectural designs. Registration suggested.

Professor Timothy Urban (Rider University) will talk about the variegated tapestry of sexual intrigue, deception, class conflict and, ultimately, forgiveness, as woven together by Mozart's music in his most frequently performed opera, "Le Nozze di Figaro." With infinite variety, Mozart crafted music that depicts with subtle nuance the wide range of human emotions lying behind the story. Timothy Urban, MM, MFA, MA, PhD, wears many hats, including performer, lecturer, conductor, singer, and artistic director. He shares his talents in a variety of venues, from local elementary schools to the New York City Opera.
