Title: RTI in Upper Elementary Transitioning to Middle Schools: Interventions for Struggling Readers Across the Core Curriculum
Presenter: Diana Malkin, IDEAL Consulting
Dates: Thursday, January 14 and Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Session Number: 10-152201
Hours/PDPs: 12
Description: This two-day workshop is designed to support content-area upper elementary and middle school teachers in providing instruction and support to all students in becoming proficient readers. Participants will look at research-based Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions that are effective in helping middle school students who struggle with reading and comprehension of text-based curriculum materials. Interventions are applicable across core curriculum areas including reading/ELA, social studies, science, and mathematics.
Reading instruction must happen across a student's day and in every content area; therefore, these sessions are designed for cross-curricular groups of teachers. We begin with a focus on understanding reading acquisition, looking at the complex skills necessary to develop proficient readers. This sets the foundation by creating a knowledge base of the developmental stages of reading which will help teachers identify and intervene with students who stall-out on the road to proficient reading. Remaining sessions branch out from this foundation to look at advanced word study, fluency, building content area vocabulary, and before/during/after content area reading strategies that engage upper-elementary and middle school students. Sessions will provide background knowledge and activities that teachers can use directly with students in whole-class and small-group instruction.
Additional information about the Presenter: Diana Malkin is a lead consultant for Ideal Consulting Services in Westport, MA. She received a M.Ed. in Learning Disabilities/E.S.L. from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently working on her C.A.G.S. in School Psychology. Diana has worked in elementary and middle school settings in TX and MA, both as a special educator and a general educator. She has spent the last 14 years working for a private company in public school settings on school reform efforts. She is also a trainer for the Wilson Reading System and Fundations, as well as AIMSweb. Her areas of expertise include: CBM assessment, the five critical components of reading (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary & Comprehension), Targeting Skill Deficits in Struggling Readers, Intervention Planning, Differentiated Instruction and Response-to-Intervention.

Evaluators will develop an understanding of the use of the WJIII in Response to Intervention and learn how to use the Brief Form of the WJ III Achievement in Tier II Progress Monitoring.
Participants will also learn how to identify cognitive processing strengths and weaknesses profiles, and develop an awareness of the impact of processing factors on achievement in the areas of reading, math and written language. Report writing strategies will focus upon using the data derived from the achievement tests to develop standards-based recommendations for classroom teachers and specialists.
All participants will receive extensive handouts, protocol booklets, and an electronic report writing template.

Title: Tiered Interventions in Middle School Mathematics: Content and Strategies for Exploring Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Decimals & Percents
Presenter: Francine Roy, Ph.D., Mathematics Education Consulting and Consultant to Fall River Public Schools.
Dr. Roy is a former middle and high school mathematics teacher and university professor. She is currently a full-time mathematics education consultant where she regularly provides PK-12 professional development to teachers, math coaches, and administrators.
Dates: Friday, December 11, 2009 (8:30 AM - 3:00 PM) and
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 (3:30 PM - 6:30 PM)
Session Number: 10-236701
Audience: Mathematics Teachers - Grades 5-8
Description: Learning Progressions and Mathematics Development
The National Math Panel identified student difficulties with whole numbers (multiplication, division) and rational numbers (fractions, decimals, and percents) as major stumbling blocks to success in higher level mathematics. The purpose of the workshop is to provide teachers with the latest research-based knowledge on how students develop proficiency in whole number multiplication and division, and fractions, decimals, and percents. Recent research suggests that numeracy develops along a somewhat predictable learning progression and that the development of “mental models” can help students overcome difficulties with computational fluency and problem solving.
In these workshops, teachers will use the knowledge gained about developmental learning progressions as a critical lens of a RtI model in mathematics.
In particular, the workshops will engage teachers to investigate:
• Do our intervention materials explicitly address the mental models that enable students to develop efficient/fluent computation strategies?
• Do our interventions materials explicitly address the mental models that enable students to comprehend the underlying structures of word problems?
• Do our assessments identify student proficiency along the learning progressions?
• Are the scope and sequences of our intervention materials based on research-based learning progression?
• How do we create and monitor effective Tier-1, Tier-2, and Tier-3 instruction in mathematics?
Cost: $160 NRC member districts. $175 non-member districts.
Includes instructional materials, morning refreshments and lunch on the full day.
PDPs: 10 PDPs with implementation project between sessions.
