Beginning the week of September 8, 2014, Family Story Time will be presented every Monday at 11:00 am at the Manomet Branch Library, and every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Main Library.  This half-hour program gives parents, caregivers, and children ages 6 and under the opportunity to enjoy books, songs, rhymes, and movement activities together while helping to develop important early literacy skills.

Research shows that children get ready to read years before they start school.  There are six pre-reading areas of knowledge which children must develop:  letter knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, narrative skills, print awareness, and print motivation.  Each week during Family Story Time, we pick one of the six pre-reading skills and put together a series of stories, music, and activities designed to reinforce these particular skills. We will also give parents ideas for how to work on these skills at home. This program is free and no registration is required.

misc_usflag 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Nautical Flag Making with Peter Arenstam

The Library welcomes local children's author Peter Arenstam for a workshop on nautical flag making. Before the cell phone or the marine radio, ships at sea found ways to communicate with other nearby ships. Over time sailors developed a set of flags, each with its own meaning, that every captain could read and understand, while passing within sight of each other on the rolling ocean.

Come learn the secrets of the nautical signal flags and bring home your own seagoing creation.

This workshop will cover the basics of the nautical alphabet. Participants will get a chance to color paper flags to spell out their own name, or a short message. We will be working with crayons, paper, and safety scissors.

This free program is for families with children ages 7 and up. Registration is required and will begin two weeks before the program, on October 18th.

This program is a part of Jen Kane's American Reading Adventure, which has been developed with a donation from the Jen Kane Scholarship and Charitable Trust which provides scholarships, endowments and donations to charitable foundations. This year the Plymouth Public Library will continue with the annual children’s reading program in honor of Jennifer Kane and her deep sense of patriotism and love for her country. Jennifer grew up in Plymouth, attended the Plymouth Public Schools, Thayer Academy and graduated from Villanova University in 1997. She secured a CPA position with Marsh McLennan on the 100th floor of the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001 Jennifer lost her life. That day became a tragic part of history and Jennifer Kane will be remembered as part of that history.

This program is free and no registration is required.

trans_mayflower 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Model Boat Making with Peter Aranstam

The Library welcomes local children's author Peter Aranstam for a model boat workshop for children ages 7 and up. This summer saw the authentic whaling ship, the Charles W. Morgan, sailing on the waters of New England for the first time in 94 years. Be a part of this historic event by making your own simple model of the ship and her sails. Learn the difference between a royal and course sail and all the ones in between as you put together a wooden model.

All supplies will be provided for this hands-on workshop. We will be using glue, safety scissors, and crayons to assemble pre-cut parts for the models, which you will be able to take home for display.
