Beginning the week of June 23, 2014, Family Story Time will be presented every Monday at 11:00 am at the Manomet Branch Library, and every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Main Library.  This half-hour program gives parents, caregivers, and children ages 6 and under the opportunity to enjoy books, songs, rhymes, and movement activities together while helping to develop important early literacy skills.

Research shows that children get ready to read years before they start school.  There are six pre-reading areas of knowledge which children must develop:  letter knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, narrative skills, print awareness, and print motivation.  Each week during Family Story Time, we pick one of the six pre-reading skills and put together a series of stories, music, and activities designed to reinforce these particular skills. We will also give parents ideas for how to work on these skills at home. This program is free and no registration is required.

Children ages 5 to 12 years are invited to join us at the kickoff event for the 4th Annual Jen Kane’s American Reading Adventure on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Main Library, 132 South Street.  Join us for some red, white, and blue tie-dying fun in the Richard M. Schiff Memorial Garden. Please bring a pre-washed plain white cotton item to tie-dye.  This program is free and no registration is required.

Before you leave, be sure to sign up for Jen Kane’s American Reading Adventure. At registration, children will receive a booklet of activities and a suggested reading list. This packet includes several trivia and history questions about the United States. The library also provides a list of children’s picture books, chapter books, biographies, and nonfiction books about people, places, and events in the United States. Participants are encouraged to read as many titles as they can! Participants have three months to complete their packets. The program will end in November, when the children who have completed the required activities will be recognized during a special program and receive a specially selected book as a gift from the Kane Family.

This reading program has been developed with a donation from the Jen Kane Scholarship and Charitable Trust which provides scholarships, endowments and donations to charitable foundations. This year the Plymouth Public Library will continue with the annual children’s reading program in honor of Jennifer Kane and her deep sense of patriotism and love for her country. Jennifer grew up in Plymouth, attended the Plymouth Public Schools, Thayer Academy and graduated from Villanova University in 1997. She secured a CPA position with Marsh McLennan on the 100th floor of the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001 Jennifer lost her life. That day became a tragic part of history and Jennifer Kane will be remembered as part of that history.
