Paws to Read

What's better than curling up with a good book? Cuddling up with a "Paws to Read" Therapy Dog and a good book! Children (grades 2-6) are invited to come and meet some of these special dogs at our Library once a month and have a good time. Each child is given a specific 15-minute time slot for a "one on one" with his or her favorite reading dog.
Although there are a variety of breeds in the "Paws to Read" Program, all dogs have a lot in common: they are good-natured; interact well with childrens, adults, and other dogs; and have been through training, testing and an orientation program with their owner. Many children bond with the dogs and return the following month to read to their special friend. Children may bring their own book or take time before their scheduled visit to browse the Library collection for their favorite authors, chapter books, fiction, non-fiction, and theme stories.
Children must be able to read by themselves. This is not a tutoring program, but rather an opportunity for a child to practice reading skills with an attentive listener.
