This month's selection is The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala's Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning, the young girl—and future matriarch, Big Ammachi—will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss, her faith and love the only constants.

As a descendant of two Holocaust survivors, Redding's Renee Bronner Pessin will mark this International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27) by telling the story of her parents, Helen and Sam Bronner, who met while imprisoned in a concentration camp during the atrocities of the Holocaust. Helen was the only survivor of more than 50 members of her immediate and extended family in Poland, while Sam and one brother were the only survivors of his immediate family.
The couple became separated during the war, but they eventually found each other following liberation. Soon after, Helen and Sam got married and immigrated to the United States to start a new life in Brooklyn, New York.
Renee shares the story of her parents through excerpts of her mother's video testimony to the Shoah Foundation and through family pictures that survived the horrors of the Holocaust. Renee feels it is more urgent than ever to share their story, especially to community listeners, to ensure that history does not repeat itself.
Renee Bonner Pessin moved to Redding over 7 years ago, and she and her husband love Redding life, especially since her daughters and their families are close by in Ridgefield and Bethel! Over the years, Renee has worked as a registered nurse, editorial associate for scientific journals, and for over 20 years, as a freelance biomedical grant and manuscript editor.

This month's selection is The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson. 1950s Philadelphia: fifteen-year-old Ruby Pearsall is on track to becoming the first in her family to attend college, in spite of having a mother more interested in keeping a man than raising a daughter. But a taboo love affair threatens to pull her back down into the poverty and desperation that has been passed on to her like a birthright.
Eleanor Quarles arrives in Washington, DC, with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t let just anyone into their fold. Eleanor hopes that a baby will make her finally feel at home in William’s family and grant her the life she’s been searching for. But having a baby—and fitting in—is easier said than done.
With their stories colliding in the most unexpected of ways, Ruby and Eleanor will both make decisions that shape the trajectory of their lives.

Join Ramblin' Dan Stevens for an entertaining and educational program encompassing the history of the Blues music in America, from its origins in the African American tradition of the deep south to the present.
Hear classic blues pieces played on authentic vintage instruments interspersed with historical images, video and educational material. The music is traced chronologically through its development in different regions of the south and follows the great African American migration to important centers like Memphis, Chicago and beyond. The roots of rock and roll, jazz and even hip hop can be traced to this important form. Of special interest are pieces performed on Dan's homemade, three stringed "Cigar Box Guitar" and one stringed "Diddley Bow", both primitive instruments used by early bluesmen and played with a "bottleneck" slide.
Presenter "Ramblin" Dan Stevens is a veteran touring bluesman and teacher who has entertained audiences throughout the US, Germany, UK, Canada and Virgin Islands. As a finalist in the International Blues Challenge on Beale St. in Memphis TN and protege of the legendary folk/blues icon, Dave Van Ronk, Dan has been lauded for his ability as a raconteur and for the authenticity of his approach gained by many years on the road as a traveling blues musician.

This month's selection is The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighbourhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows.
As these characters' stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town's white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community-heaven and earth-that sustain us.
