Meeting of nonprofit group members (elementary-aged children) to learn about history of voting rights
There will be a free 1.5 hour craft workshop for adults held this afternoon in our Keys Community Room, starting at 2 PM, with an instructor from Pop-up Art School.
The project will be '"reverse painting" where you learn about this centuries-old art form to reverse glass painting and create your own lovely piece.
Choose from three images and paint it using acrylic paint on clear acetate. Reverse painting techniques have been used since the 16th century. In reverse painting, the details are painted first and then the large shapes are created. It's the reverse order of how one usually paints on paper or canvas where we start with the background, add medium to large shapes and then details. Once the image has been painted, it is viewed from the opposite side through the clear acetate. This is a fun class and space is limited, so please sign up in advance here, which is required to attend. We hope to see you there!
This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

Writers for Democratic Action (WDA) and Courageous Conversations Towards Racial Justice announce the performance of IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE–AGAIN!, a new play resisting the rise of authoritarianism.
This is the second phase of WDA’s nationwide literary celebration of resistance to the MAGA threat. On July 19, 2024 –the day after the Republican Party nominated its candidate for President of the United States - more than 90 readings of this simple five-player script were simultaneously mounted in theaters, bookstores, bars, churches, parks, and living rooms all across the nation. Thousands of people accepted WDA’s invitation to stand strong for democracy in America. And now they are doing it again.
IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE-AGAIN! is inspired by the Sinclair Lewis play It Can’t Happen Here, which was presented across the nation on October 27, 1936 as a New Deal rallying cry against the rise of fascism in the US. Now, only days before the 2024 presidential election, and honoring the Lewis anniversary, that cry must be heard again.

The Boston Typewriter Orchestra (BTO) is a collective endeavor which "engages in rhythmic manipulation combined with elements of performance, comedy, and satire." The Orchestra has posed the questions of: "What is an instrument? Can music be performed on objects of the business world? What is the intersection of industry and art? Where can we find beauty and purpose in the world's relentless grind and repetition?" (credit goes to Adult Services staff of the Boston Public Library for composing these questions and this description for their publicity in May 2024). Following a performance at Milton Porchfest a couple of years ago, the BTO will play a one-hour concert this afternoon in our Keys Community Room, and you do not want to miss this funny and out-of-this-world presentation!
The group challenges the usual definition of "music" - which we are all accustomed to - with their very unique take on how to use voices and typewriters and bells and more to entertain and engage an audience! The band began in 2004, with performances at house parties, art galleries, and street festivals. The members have played on local, national, and international radio and TV, and have appeared in the documentary called "California Typewriter." The band has produced several singles and 5 albums and is not like anything you have seen before!
No signup is required to attend and this concert is great for all ages. It is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.
Just please come and join host Jean Hlady for a very fun afternoon!

Soon after delivering their daughter, Maddy, Liz suddenly suffers from a pulmonarhy embolism and dies. Matt is devastated, but is determined to raise Maddy as a single parent. His friends and family, however, are concerned that he may not have the skills or patience to handle raising Maddy alone. This is a wonderful story of parenthood, love, struggles surrounding balancing work, finding love again, and family life, and there are many interesting characters in Matt and Maddy's lives who you will meet, portayed by actors Alfre Woodward, Frankie R. Faison, Lil Rel Howery, DeWanda Wise, Anthony Carrigan, Melody Hurd, and Paul Reiser. The great actor Alfre Woodward plays Liz's mother, Marion, and does an excellent job.
The Rotten Tomatoes movie website has this to say about the film: "...Fatherhood offers few surprises, but strong work from this smartly assembled cast gives this fact-based story real emotional resonance." The running time is 109 minutes and it is rated PG-13 for some strong language and suggestive material. We hope you will join us for an inspiring story!
No signup is required so just come and enjoy a movie night at the MPL! This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

This week we are featuring: Yoga with Jill!
Join us this Saturday for a one-hour gentle fluid yoga class with instructor Sheila Armstrong starting at 10:30 AM in the Keys Community Room. We will practice asanas (yoga poses) and breathing techniques to come into the present moment, and create more space in our minds and bodies. Please dress comfortably and bring a yoga mat and a water bottle, and anything else that might make you more comfortable during class - a towel or blanket, blocks (if you have them), or a strap. Masks are optional and this program is suitable for ages 13 and up.
Sheila lives in Milton and is a 200-hour registered yoga instructor and a certified Reiki healer. Her love of yoga started in the late 1990s when she was looking for a way to get grounded after finishing college and starting a new job as a middle school teacher. She believes that anyone can benefit from the calm and presence gained while practicing yoga, and hopes to help people take these benefits with them into their lives off the mat as well.
You must register in advance to attend so please sign up here, and a reminder Email will be sent to you a day or so before the class. Registration opens about 3 weeks beforehand.
For questions, Email jhlady@ocln.org or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964. We hope to see you there!

This will be a one-hour afternoon Chair Yoga class with instructor Marianne Zullas. Chair yoga is a very beneficial practice for teenagers, adults, seniors, people in wheelchairs or those with physical disabilities or medical concerns.
Some of the benefits of chair yoga include gaining core strength, improving mobility and flexibility, reducing stress, and aiding mental clarity. It is also a great way to establish a community.
Marianne Zullas is a Trauma Sensitive yoga certified, Accessible/Chair yoga certified, and Sound Healing certified, registered 500-hour Yoga teacher and Reiki Practitioner. She is also the founder of MZ Yoga Connections, an independent, traveling yoga studio.
The mind and body connection has been a passion of Marianne's since childhood. Her goal is to offer her students the opportunity to dissociate from the distractions of overburdened thinking in order to be present in the moment. She wants to learn about each of her students, including their cultures, their backgrounds, and their stories, so she can better help them on their personal yoga journeys. During her free time, Marianne loves to spend time with her familiy, cook healthy meals, walk in nature, act, and write.

This will be a one-hour author talk with Anthony Sammarco about his new book called: "The Christmas Tree Shops" (c2024).
The Christmas Tree Shops was not just an icon of New England, but it was a destination with stores that boasted a diverse assortment of merchandise from seasonal decorations, home decor, housewares, food, giftware and just about everything else that the public just had to have. These were items you never thought you needed before stepping through the door, but who could resist a bargain? Founded in 1970 in Yarmouthport, it was "like walking into a closet full of surprise treasures." One never knew what he might find, but the public, always on the hunt for bargains, began to find goods that not only pleased but stretched one's budget. The word-of-mouth advertising attracted customers to Cape Cod, who returned time and time again, never sure what they might find. This was what made the shop popular and was to create a sensation on Cape Cod.
Copies of Anthony's book will be for sale at the end of this lecture. We hope you will join us. No signup is required - just come and bring your friends and family to enjoy an entertaining presentation about local history!
This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.
