misc_none.png 7:00 PM Midcentury Christmas: Online Download Event Info   Tell a Friend

Christmas in America from the 1940s through the 1960s meant aluminum trees, department store Santas, and cartoon specials on TV. Every kid in the suburbs had to have an Easy-Bake Oven, a G.I. Joe, or a Slinky. The coolest houses had rotating color wheels for their trees. Historian Leslie Goddard explores this optimistic era in a new illustrated lecture, using photographs, advertisements, greeting cards, and catalogs to explore why this era was a turning point for how we celebrate the holidays.

Presented by : Leslie Goddard

The North Shore Programming Consortium consists of six local libraries (Bayville, Glen Cove, Gold Coast, Locust Valley, Oyster Bay and Sea Cliff) that have come together to bring our patrons more of a variety in adult programming in a more cost effective way. We hope you enjoy the programs now accessible from the Consortium! Tonight's program is hosted by Oyster Bay-East Norwich Library.

Inspired by the author's upbringing in 1980s Manhattan and her personal ties to the Preppy Murders of 1986, A GORGEOUS EXCITEMENT follows a young girl in New York City as she navigates the alluring world of drugs, boys, and beauty. Capturing a bygone era that does not feel so distant, Weiner is able to skillfully depict what should be the most exciting time as a teenager – the summer before college – and how easy it is for a young woman to run in all the right circles, only to discover the charming boy everyone trusts is the realest threat walking the city’s streets.

Registration is required. All are welcome.

Copies of Cynthia's book A Gorgeous Excitment will be made avaible for purchase and signing.

It has been said that Joe DiMaggio and Frank Sinatra probably did more than anyone else of their time to bring Italian- Americans into the mainstream of their country’s popular culture during the 1930s and1940s. Since then, Italian-Americans have flourished in America, including baseball players, actors, and singers who in some cases changed American culture.

The Locust Valley Library Poetry Exchange Group meets on the 1st Saturday of each month in the upstairs Non-Fiction Room at the Library.

The purpose of this group is to gather those who write poetry to share their work in a supportive space, and to encourage all levels of accomplishment.  Those who simply enjoy listening, or wish to share a poem from one of their favorite poets, are also welcome. Poetry can make a better world!

Drop-ins welcome.
