Music Appreciation with Rob HUMBERSTON

Music Through the Ages - Middle Ages and Renaissance to 1600
Music is evolutionary: music in the West today would not be as it is without having evolved from its predecessors over the course of nearly 2,000 years of Western musical history. The medieval period from about 600 - 1100 saw the development of written music which would come to full flower of sophistication in the Renaissance, a period which music historians define as ending in the early 17th Century, around 1600. In October and November please join us as we listen to and learn about the music of this period, the foundation upon which subsequent music has developed.

Rob Humberston provides an educational and pleasant listening environment supported by his long accumulated recording collection and musical experience, including both sacred and secular roots of our Western musical heritage.

Please Register in Advance HERE.  This program is intended for adults.

Library Virtual Speakers: Native Rights and Culture in Fiction

You’re invited to join us as Mona Susan Power chats about her newest novel A Council of Dolls. This conversation highlights how her work explores Native Rights and Native American culture, in particular using an important symbol that anchors comfort and companionship in Native life: dolls.

From the mid-century metropolis of Chicago to the windswept ancestral lands of the Dakota people, to the bleak and brutal Indian boarding schools, A Council of Dolls is the story of three women, told in part through the stories of the dolls they carried....

Sissy, born 1961: Sissy’s relationship with her beautiful and volatile mother is difficult, even dangerous, but her life is also filled with beautiful things, including a new Christmas present, a doll called Ethel. Ethel whispers advice and kindness in Sissy’s ear, and in one especially terrifying moment, maybe even saves Sissy’s life.

Lillian, born 1925: Born in her ancestral lands in a time of terrible change, Lillian clings to her sister, Blanche, and her doll, Mae. When the sisters are forced to attend an “Indian school” far from their home, Blanche refuses to be cowed by the school’s abusive nuns. But when tragedy strikes the sisters, the doll Mae finds her way to defend the girls.

Cora, born 1888: Though she was born into the brutal legacy of the “Indian Wars,” Cora isn’t afraid of the white men who remove her to a school across the country to be “civilized.” When teachers burn her beloved buckskin and beaded doll Winona, Cora discovers that the spirit of Winona may not be entirely lost...

A modern masterpiece, A Council of Dolls is gorgeous, quietly devastating, and ultimately hopeful, shining a light on the echoing damage wrought by Indian boarding schools, and the historical massacres of Indigenous people. Mona Susan Power weaves a spell of love and healing that comes alive on the page. Register now to join the conversation!

ABOUT THE BOOK: It's a discussion about cats and their people! What could go wrong? We can't wait to chat with bestselling author Nicole Tersigni about her most recent book, Cat People To Judge In Art And Life - we were intrigued right from the cover! Against the backdrop of fine art, Nicole delves into the minds of our feline companions and the people who serve them. As cat AND art lovers ourselves, we're just completely tickled by this!
ABOUT NICOLE: Nicole Tersigni is a comedic writer and author of the bestselling Men to Avoid in Art and Life, and its follow-up, Friends to Keep in Art and Life. She lives in Metro Detroit with her husband, daughter, and dog.

Library Virtual Speakers: Unearthed Exploring the Smithsonian National Gem Collection with Dr. Jeff

Join us for a captivating conversation with #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Last Thing He Told Me, Laura Dave, as she chats with us online about her newest book The Night We Lost Him

The Night We Lost Him focuses on estranged siblings who discover their father has been keeping a secret for over fifty years, one that may have been fatal...

Liam Noone was many things to many people. To the public, he was an exacting, self-made hotel magnate fleeing his past. To his three ex-wives, he was a loving albeit distant family man who kept his finances flush and his families carefully separated. To Nora, he was a father who often loved her from afar - notably a cliffside cottage perched on the California coast from which he fell to his death.

The authorities rule the death accidental, but Nora and her estranged brother Sam have other ideas. As Nora and Sam form an uneasy alliance to unravel the mystery, they start putting together the pieces of their father's past—and uncover a family secret that changes everything.

With Laura Dave's trademark combination of soulful suspense and evocative family drama, The Night We Lost Him is a riveting page-turner. Register now to learn about this book and so much more!

The Stolen Beam: a Study on Reparations via Zoom
Would you welcome a place to learn why some people are talking about reparations for African-Americans? A 5-session class will be held via Zoom this spring, called The Stolen Beam Series.* The series was developed by members of the Reparations Committee of the Jewish Community of Amherst and will be co-facilitated by Rabbi Devorah JACOBSON and Mary FRIEDMAN.

The goal of the series is educational engagement with a narrative of US racial history that is different from what many of us learned in school. The class will focus on the legacy of African enslavement, what was stolen, what may be owed, and historical examples of reparations. The class offers an opportunity, especially for those relatively new to the topic, to study and reflect on writings of prominent thought leaders on reparations for African Americans as a path to restorative justice. Each class offers readings as well as videos or audio recordings. Suggested study questions are included for each class.

This is not a lecture format. We urge all participants to plan on reading and/or viewing all the materials for each session and come prepared for thoughtful discussion. Registration indicates the intent to attend and participate in all five sessions - Please register by February 10!

The class will meet via Zoom. There is no charge for this program. Most reading/video materials will be provided via the internet. Some of the materials may be available at the library.

PLEASE NOTE:  This course requires reading, viewing, active participation, and a commitment to attend each session, except for extenuating circumstances. Thank you!

PLEASE REGISTER BY FEBRUARY 10!

*The name "Stolen Beam" is a reference to a Talmudic debate about the right thing to do when we discover that the house in which we live was built with stolen materials, "a stolen beam." One rabbi argues that the entire house must be torn down and the beam returned. Another argues that it makes no sense to destroy the home, yet some form of acknowledgment and compensation is owed to the owners of the beam.  We therefore use the metaphor, The Stolen Beam, in recognition of the fact that much of our country was built on stolen land, with stolen lives and stolen labor.
